The Gin Craze was a period in the first half of the 18th century when the consumption of gin increased rapidly. Gin started out as a medicine – it was thought it could be a cure for gout and indigestion, but most attractive of all, it was cheap. The British government tried a number of times to restrict the flow of gin. Parliament passed five major Acts designed to control the consumption of gin. Though many similar drinks were available and alcohol consumption was considerable at all levels of society, gin caused the greatest public concern. The British government decided that a tax must be raised on gin, but this put many reputable sellers out of business, and made way for “bootleggers”. Overnight, gin sales went underground!
