 PWD can be a good option, but if your not an experienced dog owner, I wouldn’t recommend either of these breeds. PWD can be very stubborn and hard to train, and sadly are very prone to cancers. They rarely live past 10–12 years, with many dying from cancer younger than that not being uncommon. Basenji are not hypoallergenic and do shed quite a bit depending on the season. They are also one of the most difficult dog breeds to train. They are a very primitive breed. Even among the sighthound breeds, they are one of the most difficult to handle. I don’t recommend them to homes that don’t already have a fair amount of experience, they’re pretty aloof and independent dogs that prefer to do their own thing, and not well suited to most homes. They can also be escape artists. And if they get loose - good luck catching them!

If you're wanting a biddable, easy pet dog, I would recommend a standard poodle. They’re wonderful all around dogs that can do almost anything, don’t really shed, and are wonderful dogs to live with. They do require frequent grooming (every 2–8 weeks depending on how long you wish to keep their coat), but any dog that’s less prone to shedding and causing allergies will be that way. It’s kinda the trade off you make. I would also highly advise against the larger hairless breeds. Xolo and Peruvian Inca Orchids also tend to be very primitive dogs, and rarely make good pets for inexperienced homes. Also being hairless does NOT make them hypoallergenic. What most people react to is their dander, not their hair. So many people that are allergic to dogs still react to these hairless breeds.

 I’m not a vet, but can share what I do with my dogs when they (very occasionally) suffer from that. First, feed them only easily digested food; my choice was rice porridge made with chicken broth. To the first such feeding, mix in some nutritional charcoal (you can find them in just about any nutrition store or section of a drug store); I get the charcoal tablets which makes it easy to administer the dose (for my dogs at 50lbs, this was one or two capsules worth). Charcoal cleans out the GI tract; it is indiscriminate so next meals, follow with probiotics mixed into the food (let the food cool down else the probiotics get killed out in hot or warm food). Give your dog at least a couple days of just the porridge and probiotics then the D should have gotten resolved. (You can start adding in some regular food into the porridge and see what his BM looks like as a result.) On-going D is a worry for if you try my approach and it doesn’t work, or your dog starts displaying other or more discomfort, rush to the Vet. These are the practices I’ve applied with my dogs (though I’ve never had to do the “rush to the Vet” part thankfully). In all of this, of course, be mindful of what your dog is consuming.  Today's example: shio rejected his snack and it was a foggy day so he wasn’t feeling it. After dinner I had an appetite to eat a good chicken meal. Weather conditions might affect the dog too. I started to feed shio pasta with his meal, sometimes you feed him peas/or pasta made with chickpeas and they eat it like food. If you're still feeding your dog ground meat cooked you can give chickpea pasta and make the dog very happy. If you want to give something tasty I recommend finding vegetables they can like. Dog can’t eat broccoli/ it could be carrots(are okay raw or cooked), green-beans, or (# 1 reason) brussel sprouts are good one Make sure it is cooked and eaten in moderation(it causes gas and possible extra poop). I recommend baking it because it tastes good afterwards for both pooch and human consumption measures we used to do this for kale but then we broaden scope for other vegetables of late.

My dog doesn’t like rice

 My dog doesn’t like rice unless it has rice porridge(no salt and has egg with it?) and then he likes wild rice only. any other rice like brown rice, brown rice with barley, and white rice you're going to end up wasting. I served ground beef with veggies and that was a win but anything else like ground beef with rice it was pass he was thinking what you're giving me. I am no child here. Shio appetite is fish, sometimes beef, and sometimes chicken. He likes pork sometimes too. He likes vegetables sometimes but prepared in a way that tastes good. You best write down what you're giving your dog and make note if rejected or loved. So randomly you serve it again. Dogs' appetite depends on their stomach and what they are feeling, not where they give them food and expect them to eat it. That is what my dad thinks he thinks of dogs just going to eat food and not complain.

 Maybe start planning for a new addition next year, and start saving some money for a dog walker at least while the dog is young, or first getting used to your home. You also need to have sufficient funds for vet visits, vaccinations, flea/tick and heartworm preventives, food, license, spay/neuter if you get a puppy, etc. Having a dog is NOT inexpensive, and you shouldn’t commit to one if you won’t keep the commitment. Too many dogs are sent to shelters and rescues by people who had no idea how to raise, socialize and train a dog, and they think the dog is poorly behaved, when it was simply left to raise itself. ETA: Portuguese Water Dogs are VERY intelligent, active working dogs. They MUST be trained, and they need exercise, play and tasks, or they can get bored and destructive. Also, they need grooming - add that to your financial responsibilities list, too!

 Don’t get a puppy at this time. Your family doesn’t have the time or resources. You might consider rescuing an adult dog who is already house-trained, and physically able to wait 7 hours between the last walk of the morning and the first person who gets home to allow him to relieve himself later that day. I always advise people to only get a new dog when they have at least a week or 10 days that they can be home, or if 2 or 3 people, each takes 2 or 3 days off - specifically to take the dog out every 15–20 minutes at first, to praise the dog when it pees and poops outside, and not give it any chance to have accidents in the house, which are NEVER a dog’s fault!!
