Many thousands of African-American slaves rallied to fight for their freedom against the United States under the Union Jack, fulfilling the worst fears of the slave owners. Not at all. They will then turn their attention to pushing for federal anti-abortion laws. The subtext of a portion of the anti-Roe argument was that the Supreme Court essentially took the issue out of the state legislatures, where, conservative theory goes, the issue should have always been addressed. In this line of thinking, abortion is a “states’ rights” issue, and the Supreme Court circumvented that by finding a constitutional right that anti-abortion advocates do not recognize. So, as American conservatives see states’ rights as a fundamental unifying theory of the federalism, then overturning Roe should be a non-issue for abortion rights proponents, right? Give me a break. Do you think conservatives really believe in states’ rights? They do when it means secession from the Union to preserve slavery, or passing Jim Crow laws to maintain legal segregation and discrimination, or opposing national healthcare.

In the summertime, it can get damn hot. The highest temperature ever recorded in Minnesota was 117 degrees Fahrenheit (that’s 47 Celsius). And by the way, that wasn’t this year. That was back in 1917, in a little place called Beardsley, out by South Dakota.For the record, the highest temperature ever recorded in Alaska was 100 degrees in Fort Yukon… on June 27, 1915. (I’m not really a “climate change denier,” but I do think those facts matter.) Minnesota is really two states. There’s Northern Minnesota, basically the North Woods and the Boundary Waters, which geologically and ecologically are part of Canada (specifically western Ontario). But Southern Minnesota is more like Iowa and South Dakota. It can be steamy July weather down in Mankato while it’s still a little chilly up at Voyageurs National Park. There’s almost 6 hours of north-south driving between these places, the distance between New York City and Quebec City, or the southeastern Oregon desert and Seattle — a.k.a., very different climates.
