The most likely reason is that liberals don’t want another situation where a liberal SCOTUS Justice doesn’t retire while a Democrat president is in the White House and they have a Senate majority (currently 50:50 with the VP breaking ties) like what happened with Ruth Bader Ginsburg. RBG’s refusal to retire meant that Trump, a Republican president, ended up appointing a SCOTUS justice to fill the vacancy that resulted when she died. Republicans might not have been happy with Amy Coney Barrett as her replacement, but her appointment meant a rightward shift of the ideological makeup of SCOTUS. Many Democrats and the media felt that RBG should have retired while Obama was still President so he could appoint a replacement that was closely aligned with RBG and keep the ideological makeup of the court in a similar position. Steven Breyer is 82 which makes him the oldest sitting Justice. He also reliably votes with the left wing of the SCOTUS Justices.
