 A dog this large is fully capable of killing a human. When your dog kills someone generally, you are going to be doing some prison time. The law regards your responsibility for a potentially lethal dog similar to your responsibility for safe use of your gun, or your car. The only two Akitas that I have any personal knowledge of were a pair that I encountered (about 35 years ago) often when I was working for a social service agency where I contacted people in their homes. The married couple who were on my caseload lived in a small guesthouse on her parents’ property. The dogs were always kenneled when I visited, and I could tell they weren't friendly, at least not when kenneled. They were also in the main house at times, with the elderly parents. About two years after these two were discharged, the dogs mauled and killed a man in his 70s who was walking on the public, paved road in front of the house. There is heightened legal responsibility and liability whenever any dog is trained to guard or attack. It's just as if you pointed a gun at someone to frighten them, and `it went off’. Oh, well, now you can deal with the maw of justice. Any dog of sufficient size and strength to seriously hurt someone, should be of very sound temperament. Most large dogs are intimidating enough without any attack training that will increase an owner’s legal liability.

 First, why are you approaching the dog? Do you think the dog is lost and you’re trying to get it back to its owner? Are you trying to take its picture, read the tag on its collar, get her or him into a vehicle to go to the vet and scan for a chip? Do you think the dog is injured or ill? Good luck, but you really have to be careful. No matter how friendly your intentions, you could get hurt. First, don’t stare, don’t run, don’t make sudden moves, and don’t lean over them. Watch the dog’s communication signals as you slowly approach. If they’re growling, have the hair on their back up, stiffen their body stance, or lunge at you, back slowly away and give up whatever you were trying to do. If the dog is injured or in pain, they are more likely to hurt you if you make it worse in any way. If they stay calm, you can stand or squat near them and let them sniff your legs or feet. If they remain calm, tail wagging and relaxed, mouth open, with a friendly or curious look, slowly extend your hand in front of their nose sniff. All the better if you have a treat for the dog (drop it on the ground in front of them, some dogs accidentally break the skin if you offer it from your hand.)

 Don’t try to touch the dog or its collar until you’re sure the dog is okay with it. Speak in a high-pitched, friendly voice. You can try commands like sit or down, and see if the dog knows these commands, which can make your interactions easier. Anytime the dog shows signs of fear or hostility, back off slowly. If the dog comes after me with what looks like hostile intent, I get bossy with them and say loudly, “Stay!” or “Go home!” I will wave my arms or a stick, pretend to throw a rock to discourage them. If all else fails, take a picture of the dog with your phone for your Animal Control report. Again, DO NOT RUN. The dog can catch you, and if you act like prey, some dogs will treat you like prey. That doesn’t usually end well.

 A dog wagging its tail is happy and friendly, right? Nope… not always. If the tail is tucked in a little and just the tip is wagging, that dog may be shy or actually AFRAID and a dog that is fearful of you or what you are doing, MAY end up snapping or even biting in a effort to drive you back away from it, or make you stop what you are doing or trying to do.\ What about when you come home from school or work and your dog is vocalizing in some way, not just wagging the tail… which may be level with the butt or held higher, but wagging its whole body or at least the whole back end of the body? As a rule…. This shows that the dog IS happy, full of joy to FINALLY SEE YOU, wonderful YOU, again. I have had dogs that would bark a bit and carry on vocally as if to chastise me for having left.

My current doggie-girl… likes to run and grab her “gator-baby” and offer THAT as a gift if only her favorite friend will just sit down and stay longer… “Look, here’s my gator, you don’t have to leave, we could play a while, see, we can play!” A dog barking that is standing STIFF, TAIL RAISED, EARS BACK is more than likely to be considering coming after you, and NOT in a friendly manner. The same dog may NOT be barking, but may have the hair on its back raised and may be lifting the upper lip, showing teeth. Oh, and there ARE dogs that routinely SMILE, showing teeth… but again, you have to read the rest of the body… with this SMILE… often the tail AND body are wagging. To ACCURATE to know what direction a dog’s mind is going you HAVE TO LEARN how to read the dog’s body language.

 If you are still dog-sitting you can keep them out of their kennel as long as you are there. But if you have to leave them you must keep them in their kennel. ( FYI: the rule of thumb is that the dog should be able to stand up and turn around in their kennel to be the right size.) If it’ll make you feel any better, dogs like to be in their own “cave”. It helps them feel safe and protected. You can put in a toy, or towel and a bowl of water. Some owners put a big towel on top so that three of the four sides are covered. This makes the “cave” even more cozy. I’m with you on not using a kennel (I’ve never had them for my dogs), but it’s standard practice. Your neighbors are fortunate to have you care so much.

I was a civilian employee for the US Army when I began needing a service dog.

 I was a civilian employee for the US Army when I began needing a service dog. First, the doctor had to give me a script indicating I would not be able to do my work without the support and assistance of a service animal. Second, I had to get a dog and get it trained to fulfill my needs. That dog had to meet the specifications of size and type of dog by the Army. I think he had to be at least 22 inches high at the shoulders, and could be any kind of dog except a pit bull. Sad but true. Third, I had to apply to my unit and my installation for their permission to bring my service dog to work with me. While using a service dog, I was not allowed to permit other people to touch or pet him or bring him treats. Since my dog was the first service animal they had ever had, we were scrutinized every day. I was able to take my dog outside for a break every two hours and he had to be on the leash the entire time. I had to clean up after my dog and had to organize my office cubicle so there would be sufficient space for him to rest until needed for my service. This is just my experience, and you may have a different one. Also, we got a US Army ID card that allowed my dog into secure areas (SCIF). That angered the contractors who were not allowed to go there. But so is life.
