The coaches claim India is well prepared to compete for the final (men’s) and quarter’s (women’s). Shooting is going better than expected, as all of India’s shooters shot at the European champs in the MQS section. This helps keep them oiled rather than catching rust. They all got vaccinated fully while abroad and will fly from there. We will see if the tennis doubles teams can make it. I think Sania can, with her protected ranking. Not sure about her’s and Ankita’s chances of medaling. Same for a smattering of other sports. Hopeful of over 120 athletes representing India. Sumit Nagal qualified for the Tennis men’s singles event, a few days ago (today is 7/18) and no one is sure if Rohan Bopanna can qualify for the men’s doubles. Jeremy Lalrinnunga is a medal prospect for 2024, so I hope he gets good experience at Tokyo and grows from it. We’ll know more after late April’s Asian Championships. Edit: Doesn’t look like he will get in; had a sub-par performance. Let’s hope the final list is in his favor. The “Others”- I’ll use this section to talk about a few of the events where I am not hoping for a medal and those where I have limited knowledge and information. Equestrian, Fencing, Golf, Gymnastics, Judo, Rowing, Sailing, Swimming, Table Tennis and Tennis don’t elicit excitement with respect to medals but absolutely do when it comes to seeing best performances. I can only imagine if Bhavani Devi can fence herself into the QFs or if any Indian swimmer qualifies for the semis. Absolute madness. But wait, what about our mixed doubles TT team?! Maybe they can spring a surprise but I am not sure. Same for Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina. And that is it with regard to the medal predictions. I’ll keep updating it till late July, then hope the event goes unencumbered and see India perform above expectations. Edit 2: Wrestling seeds announced; Bajrang and Deepak seeded 2nd, Ravi 4th and Vinesh 1st. This will help in the first bout or so as it will take 4 wins for Gold (16 wrestlers in each weight category). Weightlifting- This is a medal lock as any, provided Mirabai Chanu actually completes at least one Snatch and one Clean and Jerk. The only ones ahead of her are the Chinese and North Korean girls, and they have lifted around 210 kg total, which may be a bridge too far. On the other hand, having tracked those behind Mira, none seem close to her 205 kg total that she is more than capable of repeating. I am hoping she can go for Gold, but a Bronze is the least she should get. Here’s hoping she performs as expected at the Asian Champs in April and confirms her Tokyo 2020 appearance. Edit 1: With North Korea seemingly not participating, Mirabai is now a lock for the Silver medal. All she has to do to medal is lift at least a 85kg (snatch) and a 110kg (clean & jerk). Even with such conservative lifts, she can easily get the Bronze. If she can go above 206kg, that would be great to see, regardless of whether she can outperform the Chinese representative. I really hope she doesn’t flop like at Rio 2016. Edit 2: With her 119 kg Clean & Jerk at the Asian Champs 2021 coming out of the blue, she only needs to lift a starting weight to get at least a Bronze or even a Silver. China can send only 4 men and 4 women, so they may choose NOT to send any 49 kg representative. I’ll keep any eye for this; should it materialize, Mira will be the clear cut Gold favorite unless the North Koreans rejoin in some capacity.

All three- Bajrang, Vinesh and Ravi are elite talent; Bajrang will have to make his defense iron-clad but maintain his offense, Vinesh will have to find a way to beat the Japanese girl and Ravi, the Russian. With Rashidov injured, it makes Bajrang’s path to a medal easier but Otaguro will be tough to beat, even without his shenanigans. Praying for all, not just these three, to be injury free. Let’s see how many qualify through the Asian and World Qualification tournament. Edit 1: Although 5 more qualified in these two tournaments, none of the Greco Roman wrestlers could make it. I still think Anshu or Seema and Sonam might not be medal contenders just yet. Hopefully Sumit Malik can clear his name as it looks like an injury he was getting treatment for caused an entry of a banned substance. Also, the wrestlers are now training and/or competing in Europe. This is again, good news and shows a seriousness by our govt to prepare.

Edit 2: Amongst a smattering of good news in late June, such as Sajan Prakash breaching the Olympic A qualifying mark as the first Indian to do so, to more qualifiers putting the Indian contingent at 107, the entire shooting squad seems to have had an off colour World Cup. A bit worrying, but I sure hope they can use this to their advantage and peak like the other countries have done at this competition. I’ll have to temper my expectations a bit; 2–5–8 would be the worst, median and best case medals from shooting. I still believe in them and strongly feel that they will contribute around 40% of the total Indian medals. Wrestling- The second best shot at a decent medal haul, Bajrang, Ravi and Vinesh are my medal picks. Deepak won his quota partly because he was in a weak draw and his performances since have proven it. None of the other men (both FS and Greco-Roman) or women seem close to world class, but I hope someone like Pooja Dhanda can make it. Even though India won 4 more quotas through the Asian and World qualifiers, I don’t think any of those 4 are medal locks. Maybe Anshu Malik can spring a surprise but her approach is almost always a stand-up one and has few single/double leg or ankle attacks. She is also a bit young, so against stronger opponents, she could be overwhelmed.

I also think there are 4 medals possible in each of the men’s and women’s 10m air rifle and 10m air pistol disciplines, with Saurabh a medal lock. Maybe a chance in the 25m women’s air pistol and the 50m 3 positions men’s. Both skeet and trap don’t figure to do well, but again, I hope I am wrong. Especially skeet, since both Mairaj Khan and Angad Bajwa have qualified. The former came agonisingly close last time around. I don’t have to write down the names of the exceptional talent that will represent India. I simply hope that they, especially the young, don’t crumble under pressure thinking this is the Olympic Games. I hope they play it like any other World Cup and truly wish them the best. Edit 1: Shooting team picked (Tokyo Olympics: Full list of Indian shooters selected - Manu Bhaker named in 3 events, Elavenil picked ) and this is a bit weird….I am hoping it pans out, but the 10m air rifle women and mixed team selections were…strange to say the least. Maybe the NRAI thinks Anjum can make the finals but not medal as consistently as Apurvi or Elavenil (based on all 3’s World Cup results). But she was kept in the mixed team, where she did have better results. Here’s hoping it all works out really well for everyone.

Shoving the pill down their throat

Shoving the pill down their throat. My friend’s medium size dog was dying and we didn’t know how to get it to take its antibiotics. So we tried to dissolve it in her food. It didn’t work, the dog refused to eat. We also tried to mix it with water and squirt it into her mouth with a syringe. We wrestle that dog for 2 hours with two people. Her boyfriend later showed us how to shove the pill down its throat and it was over within a minute.
