Edit 2: Wrestling seeds announced; Bajrang and Deepak seeded 2nd, Ravi 4th and Vinesh 1st. This will help in the first bout or so as it will take 4 wins for Gold (16 wrestlers in each weight category). Weightlifting- This is a medal lock as any, provided Mirabai Chanu actually completes at least one Snatch and one Clean and Jerk. The only ones ahead of her are the Chinese and North Korean girls, and they have lifted around 210 kg total, which may be a bridge too far. On the other hand, having tracked those behind Mira, none seem close to her 205 kg total that she is more than capable of repeating. I am hoping she can go for Gold, but a Bronze is the least she should get. Here’s hoping she performs as expected at the Asian Champs in April and confirms her Tokyo 2020 appearance.
Edit 1: With North Korea seemingly not participating, Mirabai is now a lock for the Silver medal. All she has to do to medal is lift at least a 85kg (snatch) and a 110kg (clean & jerk). Even with such conservative lifts, she can easily get the Bronze. If she can go above 206kg, that would be great to see, regardless of whether she can outperform the Chinese representative. I really hope she doesn’t flop like at Rio 2016.
Edit 2: With her 119 kg Clean & Jerk at the Asian Champs 2021 coming out of the blue, she only needs to lift a starting weight to get at least a Bronze or even a Silver. China can send only 4 men and 4 women, so they may choose NOT to send any 49 kg representative. I’ll keep any eye for this; should it materialize, Mira will be the clear cut Gold favorite unless the North Koreans rejoin in some capacity.
