A pet has also been found to help people readjust after going through trauma like surgery for cancer. This is because an animal gives them something to focus on besides their situation; this shifts their attention towards things other than themselves which takes their mind off what they're going through. For someone suffering from depression, their mind is always focused on themselves. For someone who feels great, even losing their pet would not diminish their sense of wellbeing because they have so much else going for them in life.
