I’ve not done this, but some suggest hiding your cat’s food in different areas so that they have to go searching for it. Since I’ve not tried it, I don’t know how well that would work. I know my cats would be watching me hide the food, so it would defeat the purpose. However, if they have to work to get at it, that might help. They do have bowls where cats have to work to get the food out (so you don’t have to hide the food). I always thought that was good for cats who were overweight, but it might help here as well. There are a few steps you can take, but keeping your cat indoors is the best way (and, again, it has the added benefit of keeping her safer, healthier, and living longer than outdoor cats).

Indoor cats also have hunting instincts. To help them, you need to play with your cat. Depending on her age and personality, you may need to play with her a lot. There are a lot of cat toys out there to help with their hunting. A cat wand is a perfect toy to deal with this. All you have to do is wave it around and let her chase it. If you are unable to move around the house or are lazy, you can even wave it around from your seat. A laser light does the same thing (although if you get one of these make sure that you do not shine into your cat’s eyes). My two cats enjoy playing with the wand. One doesn’t like it as much, but he does *love* chasing the laser light. I play with him several times a day (without leaving the comfort of my chair).

Cats are natural hunters. It is part of who they are. You cannot change that. You can, though, do some things to help keep her from hunting animals. The most obvious thing is to keep her in the house. Cats who stay indoors live longer and healthier lives. They are less likely to get sick (outdoor cats get ill from things indoor cats don’t come into contact with) and they are less likely to get killed (by people, other cats, predators, or moving vehicles). They can also be very happy. On top of that, they don’t catch anything unless it gets into the house. If you *have* to let your cat outside, get a catio. That way, they can go outside while remaining safe and will also *not* be able to catch other animals.

Teach him things. Start with basic obedience and then move to tricks. My puppy is one of those dogs! He’s a 6 year old German Shepherd and he’s so bright that if I don’t keep him busy, he will find things to do and that turns him into a one dog wrecking crew. He knows how to open drawers (he taught himself), so I have him doing it on command now. He opens doors, he can pick up a credit card or bus pass if I drop it and now he is giving it to me as well. We’re working on pushing elevator buttons and the automatic door button for the gate. I bought him puzzle toys. I need new harder ones because he figured out how to dismantle the entire toy, without damaging it. He has a high play drive, so I make everything a game and he will do anything for a banana chip. As soon as he is done teething I’m going to teach him to help with the laundry so he has one more thing he can do. Then we’ll learn to ride the bus and go shopping. He’s going to be most happy being a service dog and I’m getting to the point where I could use the help.

The only solution has been for us to get something prescribed by our vet to calm them down. But you have to get ahead of it. If you wait until the fireworks or storm starts, it's too late because the adrenaline starts flowing and there's no calming them down. The prescribed dosage for what the vet gave us is 1 or 1.5 pills so I started at 6:00 giving them each one. By the time the fireworks started at about 7:30, they were pretty calm. As things ramped up, I gave another half at around 9:00 and they both just stayed mellow. For the first time in years, the 4th was calm for them this year. Work with your vet. They'll help you find a solution that will calm your dog down and reduce it's anxiety.

Other than becoming familiar with voice commands through repetition, dogs can't communicate and express what's scaring them. We have three dogs and one of them, an 83 lb male Lab mix, is terrified of fireworks and thunder. Another one, a 45 lb female mixed breed, gets scared as well. Just not as bad. Our 50 lb male Lab mix just kind of deals with it but you can tell he's nervous. There's no way for us to talk to them and reason with them to help them understand there's no need to be nervous. So what do you do to calm them down? We tried those “thunder jackets" but they were useless. We also tried calming sprays and chews but those didn't phase them. Storms weren't too bad, but imagine trying to sleep on the 4th of July with an 83 lb dog crawling between you and your wife (or husband) and trying to curl up on your pillows shaking in fear. Yeah, it doesn't work.
