Before I go any further, though, I’d like to say two things to Quran readers. First, many ask about whether something that has happened might harm a cat. If the person has such a deep concern then a call should be made to a vet as vets deal with health and cat (and dog) crises. Don’t ask a bunch of average people on a website who have best guesses rather than real knowledge to offer. Second, with questions such as this one, try to answer it yourself by invoking the great genie of the internet, Ms Google. Ask Google the question and you’ll find an answer to likely 80–90% of the topics that come up on Quora. Just so you know, that’s where I get many of my answers to people’s questions. Again, think before asking. If urgent and serious -> call a vet. If curious but not urgent then use Google.

A cat must eat roughly every day. When it doesn’t, the cat's metabolism starts consuming itself. Which is not bad if it is a diet as it focuses on consuming fat - but very bad when the liver malfunctions. Eating then causes the cat to have a gag reflex, and throw up any food eaten - and that can be painful, resulting in the cat choosing not to eat. Hepatic lipidosis is the formal name for “fatty liver disease”. The only treatment is having a tube inserted into their stomach, and pumping a little food into it on a minimum of a daily basis. The inserted tube bypasses the gag reflex. It can take a couple of weeks to get over the problem, but the damage to the liver remains. Also expect heart problems as well as future liver issues. Diabetes tends only to work with injections of insulin as the pancreas has pretty much quit functioning. Sometimes it can be treated with special foods if it is partially working, but expect to have to use injections every day for the rest of the cat's life.

I don't know enough about this particular situation to state it is cruel not to let your cat in the house. However, unless you have an outdoor facility offering shelter from predators and the elements where you frequently join the cat for some bonding time, it is cruel. When you don't allow a companion animal to be your companion, all you really are doing is feeding a friendly stray cat. Oh, you may play with it a little outside, you may love it for a while. But eventually, you will go in the house and close the door to the kitty, locking yourself away from it. You get to be safe. You get to be sheltered from the scary winds. That poor cat is out there in the midst of it. Keeping a cat outside significantly shortens its life. Think of all the things that can hurt or kill it. If your intention is to keep a cat outside, please do not get a cat. They give us so much, they deserve to be inside and safe.

After 70 or so years being close to cats, I've never noticed a difference like that between males and females. I adopted a cat from a rescue cattery (cat's owner being rehoused). Four years old and a girl. As I looked along the cat pens, this one came as near the wire netting as she could, so I bent down, spoke, and offered a finger. She tried to rub a cheek there. Her sister watched from a distance. In other words, she approved. At ten years old, this cat is the most loving I've ever known. When I sit on the sofa, she curls up beside me. If I go to the bathroom she's outside, waiting. All this is to advise you to find one that shows interest in you. Just, if possible, look for one who has lived indoors. It's easier than training one who’s itching to go out. Inoculation, flea deterrent, keep up with it all, get to know your vet, and I wish you many happy years with your dear cat.

Due to circumstances completely out of your control, your life has been thrusted into a new environment, with new disadvantages, pitfalls, and downsides. All of the above is from the teachings of Nichiren Buddhism. Nichiren Daishon in was a 13th century Japanese monk who followers believe was the Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law. In the Former Day of the Law, which followed Shakyamuni’s death, those attaining enlightenment were more numerous than in the ages that follow. In the Middle Day of the Law progressively fewer people were able to attain enlightenment through the practice laid out in Shakyamuni’s early teaching and in the Latter Day of the Law these teachings (see the three vehicles and the parable of the three carts and the burning house and compare to the Holy Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost) are said to fall into confusion and lose the power to lead people to enlightenment. In this age, which we are currently in (according to Nichiren), only the path outlined in the Lotus Sutra ,introduced late in Shayamuni’s teachings, is said to still have the power to lead people to enlightenment.

If all of this is true, then there are many people in the world who are living in the nirvana of remainder (since they maintain this state through death and rebirth and no one has attained the nirvana of no remainder since Nichiren so their numbers are only increasing) as well as sages and arhats but no true Buddhas. Which begs two related questions in my mind: what follows the Latter Day of the Law and will there be another true Buddha?
