All of the above is from the teachings of Nichiren Buddhism. Nichiren Daishon in was a 13th century Japanese monk who followers believe was the Buddha of the Latter Day of the Law. In the Former Day of the Law, which followed Shakyamuni’s death, those attaining enlightenment were more numerous than in the ages that follow. In the Middle Day of the Law progressively fewer people were able to attain enlightenment through the practice laid out in Shakyamuni’s early teaching and in the Latter Day of the Law these teachings (see the three vehicles and the parable of the three carts and the burning house and compare to the Holy Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost) are said to fall into confusion and lose the power to lead people to enlightenment. In this age, which we are currently in (according to Nichiren), only the path outlined in the Lotus Sutra ,introduced late in Shayamuni’s teachings, is said to still have the power to lead people to enlightenment.
If all of this is true, then there are many people in the world who are living in the nirvana of remainder (since they maintain this state through death and rebirth and no one has attained the nirvana of no remainder since Nichiren so their numbers are only increasing) as well as sages and arhats but no true Buddhas. Which begs two related questions in my mind: what follows the Latter Day of the Law and will there be another true Buddha?
