My knee; where her bumper hit me; got quite swollen. My father was furious; not at me; but me but the lady who took off before I could make out what had happened.

One time in college I almost hit a car and I remember shaking because it can be very scary. My professor told me something that helped me.

 A cat must eat roughly every day. When it doesn’t, the cat's metabolism starts consuming itself. Which is not bad if it is a diet as it focuses on consuming fat - but very bad when the liver malfunctions. Eating then causes the cat to have a gag reflex, and throw up any food eaten - and that can be painful, resulting in the cat choosing not to eat. Hepatic lipidosis is the formal name for “fatty liver disease”. The only treatment is having a tube inserted into their stomach, and pumping a little food into it on a minimum of a daily basis. The inserted tube bypasses the gag reflex. It can take a couple of weeks to get over the problem, but the damage to the liver remains. Also expect heart problems as well as future liver issues. Diabetes tends only to work with injections of insulin as the pancreas has pretty much quit functioning. Sometimes it can be treated with special foods if it is partially working, but expect to have to use injections every day for the rest of the cat's life.

 I don't know enough about this particular situation to state it is cruel not to let your cat in the house. However, unless you have an outdoor facility offering shelter from predators and the elements where you frequently join the cat for some bonding time, it is cruel. When you don't allow a companion animal to be your companion, all you really are doing is feeding a friendly stray cat. Oh, you may play with it a little outside, you may love it for a while. But eventually, you will go in the house and close the door to the kitty, locking yourself away from it. You get to be safe. You get to be sheltered from the scary winds. That poor cat is out there in the midst of it. Keeping a cat outside significantly shortens its life. Think of all the things that can hurt or kill it. If your intention is to keep a cat outside, please do not get a cat. They give us so much, they deserve to be inside and safe.

 After 70 or so years being close to cats, I've never noticed a difference like that between males and females. I adopted a cat from a rescue cattery (cat's owner being rehoused). Four years old and a girl. As I looked along the cat pens, this one came as near the wire netting as she could, so I bent down, spoke, and offered a finger. She tried to rub a cheek there. Her sister watched from a distance. In other words, she approved. At ten years old, this cat is the most loving I've ever known. When I sit on the sofa, she curls up beside me. If I go to the bathroom she's outside, waiting. All this is to advise you to find one that shows interest in you. Just, if possible, look for one who has lived indoors. It's easier than training one who’s itching to go out. Inoculation, flea deterrent, keep up with it all, get to know your vet, and I wish you many happy years with your dear cat.

Due to circumstances completely out of your control, your life has been thrusted into a new environment, with new disadvantages, pitfalls, and downsides. You’ll discover new ideas, new ways to look at the world, and new interests from where you are now, and you’ll eventually realize that you’d never have had the opportunity if you returned.
