You appear to assume that suggesting Jesus may have been gay would upset religious people. I can’t imagine why! Surely no decent person would ever think badly of being gay? It was (and still is in many languages) pronounced “ye-sooss”). Actually, it is looked at in a different way. We Muslims believe that he did not die when people saw him dying on the cross.

Are we seeking truth are or do we want to settle with just what we know comfortably and easily? There’s no evidence in the Gospels that Jesus was gay, so for gay people to claim him as “one of them” is inappropriate. On the other hand, there’s no evidence in the Gospels that Jesus was straight, so for heterosexual people to claim him as “one of them” is also inappropriate. He may have been gay or straight or any one of the many other options…it simply isn’t mentioned. Your statement that Jesus wasn’t in any way sexual is unfounded - just because sexual issues are not described, that doesn’t mean they didn’t exist. The bible never describes Jesus’s bowel movements either, but it would be a bit of a stretch to insist that therefore he never had any.

If people feel so offended for Jesus potentially not being cis or straight in their body, then I don’t know what to say. Sounds very similar to the rising theories that Jesus may not have been Caucasian- people are SO eager to say ‘color doesn’t matter’ even though we see white Jesus in most places thus far, even though we now know that historically speaking, the Christian push and preservation of knowledge was tainted by great deals of socializations and only a minority group of supposed elite religious folk were allowed to alter or determine or pick and choose what portrayals of spirituality are valid or not. Jesus could be non-caucasian and Jesus could be non-cishet. and so what would be the implications of that?

I do not think it is ok to joke about someone’s beliefs when we know it would make them distressed. At the same time, I wish the energy shown here, with supposedly non-religious people joking at someone’s CHOICES, would be shown to people joking at who SOMONE IS. Did this ‘religious’ person ever act as a passive bystander to homophobia? Are their beliefs homophobic or invalidating of queer identities? If any of this is yes, I can see WHY your friends were inclined to question commonly accepted beliefs about Jesus- especially beliefs/lenses that are homophobic. If no, then yea- I think 100% you can call them out NOT for questioning’ Jesus’ gender, but for INTENTIONALLY saying something to offend someone who they KNOW would be 100% offended.

I think you should have a very long think about whether praying for the dead is okay or not.
