Further, if the homeowner represented to the insurance company that there were no dogs there, he would not be covered (unless… ). So, if you were not supposed to have a dog or if the dog you have is a breed that was refused by the landlord (because his insurance also refuses it) then you will be in more trouble. Plan on being sued. After all, it was your fault. You did not have control of the dog. It falls on you. Unless the person took control in some manner and caused his own problem, you will be at fault. You may be at fault, but the owner is the one who has insurance. Hopefully, you have tenant insurance, but the owner's insurance likely has a higher limit. Don’t rest easily. If you cause the owner damages (a judgment against him) he can then go against you for that judgment. You may not be able to pay, but that will haunt you for many years. Insurance companies do that every day. They pay the claimant and then go get their money from the party at fault. They are not always successful, but they can try.
