It would probably be the Douglass C-47, the military transport version of the DC-3 airliner. Because of its versatility, simplicity in design, and all-around ruggedness, it is probably the one WW2-era aircraft still in use in the highest numbers today. Today, cargo haulers are using an upgraded version of the old Gooney Bird, where the increasingly rare Twin Wasp radial engines are replaced with more serviceable turboprops, and the fuselage is actually lengthened by grafting in a section from a grounded DC-3, in order to haul even more cargo. It is strange to see the beloved DC-3 with turboprops, but if it keeps these old birds flying, it’s okay.
