We have a chain of convenience stores in New York and New England, Stewart’s Shops. They have a rather elaborate fast food spread, including the usual pizza slices, hot dogs and bratwurst on the rollers, meat sauce and chili. They also have sauerkraut, freshly-chopped onions, onion relish, shredded cheese as well as commercial catsup, relish and mustards. Their buns are fresh, wrapped in foil paper, and they have no “wizard fingers'' on the rollers. There is often a 2 for 4 special, and my usual is 2 dogs, one with mustard and kraut, and the other with chili and onions, with occasional flavor excursions. The dogs, plus a medium coffee, is $4.03. A fine meal, at that. By the way, their rolls and pastry selection includes delicious, glazed apple fritters, perfect for breakfast.
