Many cats and dogs have beautiful friendships. When we had our first dog, one of our cats ran away a week before her scheduled spay and came home very, very pregnant, so we resigned ourselves to it and raised the kittens (before having the naughty thing spayed). The dog nominated herself as co-mother and cared for those kittens as if they were her own pups. She was spayed and had never been bred, but it didn’t matter; in Manitou’s mind, they were Helpless Babies and Required Her Care. (The mother cat had already deputized me as a helper and clearly expected backup from the other members of her ‘colony’, so she was pleased to have a third major helper.) Manitou licked their bellies and bottoms to help them eliminate, allowed them to snuggle into her belly fur, and guarded them against any perceived danger.
