The more people you can control within your block, the higher your tally. As a raw tally, it does not represent athletic ability, it represents size, wealth and power, which is the polar opposite of what the olympics is about. Better would be to publish medals per capita (go Estonia!). But even that is awkward. The usual winners are Finland, Norway, Sweden, all wealthy countries with time and money to spend on entertainment and sport. There is another problem, many people these days are dual citizens, many have lived in multiple countries and have multiple loyalties. Many wander and work freely across boundaries, like in the EU or the UK. Several countries are ambiguously recognised (Taiwan), some people are refugees. It is a mess and validates nationalism for people. I say we need to stop publishing tallies per country entirely from the olympics.
