 The trouble with training a dog to chase cats is that the dog could injure himself, both in the chase and/or from a cornered cat (cats can take out a dog's eye with one swipe). Another problem is the result may be a dead or severely injured cat and you will be responsible for its death, its owner's grief, and possibly their veterinary bills. Mind you, I don’t know why you find it necessary. I’ve had cats and garden wildlife for years, they exist together in the wild and it’s no different in your garden. All our feeders are in bushes and trees and the water bath and dish on poles and I’ve often seen one of the cats sitting under the birdbath watching intently. Of course, given a chance, he’d have a go but in reality knows that the birds can see him and he’s got no chance, especially when he’s distracted by the Magpies who come down and tweak his tale. I also regularly witness a cat sharing a dish with a hedgehog and we have a squirrel that likes to torment the cats and makes a lot of noise doing it - not sure what he’s saying to the cats but I doubt it’s polite. I often see people blaming the lack of garden wildlife on cats but it’s usually a lack of a decent environment for the wildlife, not cats. Lastly, many dogs chase birds and kill other garden wildlife, so you may just be replacing one problem with another, especially if your dog is a barker. Birds, in particular, like a quiet environment with no drama.
