Donald Trump won the Republican presidential nomination in 2016 because the Republican party has lost the confidence of its voters. It is important to recognize that Trump defeated a field of 16 other candidates for the GOP’s nomination who were mostly very experienced and well regarded Republican politicians. The reason why this happened is that prior to Trump, the GOP routinely failed to defend the interests of its voters when in it was in power, and has been far too willing to consign its voters to fighting foreign wars that did not serve national interests. For example, in our present circumstances, there is no benefit to the United States as a whole from high levels of unskilled immigration. The Democrat political party benefits because the vast majority of immigrants are likely to become Democrat voters, and employers of low skill labor benefit because high levels of immigration push down wage levels. Employees lose because wages are lower, and the entire country loses as the United States dissolves into an ungovernable sea of racial recriminations. Nonetheless, the establishment GOP establishment supports high levels of immigration. Republican voters have noticed that Republican politicians like George W. Bush, John McCain, Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan and many others all talked conservatively on the campaign trail and then govern way more liberally when in office. They have broken faith with their voters. Out of desperation, Republican primary voters took a chance and voted for someone completely different. That is why Trump won the GOP’s 2016 presidential nomination.
