Cat breeds do not occur naturally

Cat breeds do not occur naturally; they are the result of selective breeding by humans, just as dog breeds are. However, it is incorrect to say that big cats do not look different from one another within the same species. There is considerable variation in markings and coloration among many of the big cat species. Sometimes this is due to the development of subspecies when populations of the same species are isolated from one another — sort of the natural analog of selective breeding.
