Disclaimer here: I have only bought dogs as puppies, and have never adopted a stray. But dogs have a built-in shopping list, and they use body language to tell humans what they want: “Time to get up and play! I need to be petted for five minutes, and then we have to go on a walk. Breakfast time! Be sure to give me lots of cuddles while you’re eating your own breakfast.” It’s important to make sure your dog is not making 100% of your decisions during the day. They might listen to what you want, but this requires a lot of extra effort. It is not automatic.
