They have learned it is a way to get your attention. Every night, my husband would be at the computer desk, and the dog would think it was time for his beloved daily “dental stick”. The dog would sit there quietly for some time, looking at my husband, then moving his eyes to the shelf above the computer, where the dental sticks were kept. If my husband would ignore this hint, our dog would paw ON my husband’s knee. And if my husband then ignored this signal, our dog would start tapping his paw on my husband’s knee until he turned away from the screen and got that dental stick down. Dogs learn what works.
